Don’t forget about the fireflies.

Last night I was taking a shower, thinking about how June is already coming to an end. It occurred to me that I had not seen fireflies as much as usual, that I’d only seen them once at the beginning of the month. Of course there aren’t suddenly less fireflies this year, it’s simply that I haven’t been outside at the time they are out, to take them in. I had this epiphany and ran downstairs and outside after my shower.

It was 8:38 PM and it felt almost divine, like I’d been called outside at that exact moment, there were fireflies lighting up everywhere. It was a good reminder that beautiful and special things are always happening. Just because you aren’t there to see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. I’d been caught up in the evening routine, dinner, dishes, a shower and because of it, I was missing what I consider an important ritual of summer. The fireflies are out there almost every night in June at a certain time just waiting and doing their important work, it’s up to me to make the time to notice them.

There are so many beautiful things happening all around us all the time. It’s June, go outside, look around, please don’t forget about the fireflies.
